This is far less dangerous than expected - snus gives no increased mortality (translated with google original link below)

Local News - 5 kr for 5 weeks
It shows a new study in the Lancet, writes research.no .
Tobacco head of the Finnish Institute of Public Health, Karl Erik Lund, believes that communication about risk is getting worse.
"But for us who have been following the research on snuff in recent decades, this is not very surprising," says Karl Erik Lund to research.no.
Global Burden of Disease, a research collaboration, has for the first time calculated the number of deaths that may be associated with nuisance. And the study concludes with the following: Estimated mortality of snuff is zero.
The researchers could not demonstrate that using snus causes an increased risk of any of the diseases included in their calculation basis.
According to research director Karl Erik Lund, the result was as expected. He has even called for calculations for the risk of diseases of snuff from his colleagues on the health side for a long time.
Lund believes the study is an unconditional happy news.
"It's gratifying that a hard-charged healthcare nevertheless does not have to prepare for a new epidemic of tobacco diseases," he told the site.
However, the researchers found an increased risk of two types of cancer of another type of tobacco that is not cigarettes - high tobacco poison tobacco.
This is a tobacco type used in India, Pakistan and North Africa, giving it an increased risk of cancer in the lip, oral cavity and esophagus. This type of slab tobacco, which has a much higher content of carcinogenic nitrosamines than snus. And it takes 48,000 lives a year.
Furthermore, it appears that passive smoking caused 883,000 deaths in 2016. And 6.3 million people died as a result of smoking.

So despite low harm 0-5% risk only where snus is concerned and despite almost 200 years of research and use of snus - and despite having some of the lowest rates of smoking in the world- and all the other positives that snus brings to the whole quit smoking thing...

Snus may be held back in the EU tobacco directive because of a bribery scandal and because of vaping?

I still dont know why I am continually surprised by the overall stupidity and selfishness of tobacco control zealots

Smoking leads to less increase in life expectancy for less educated women
    https://www.eurekalert.org/pub_relea...-slt121117.php

"Deaths from smoking in Sweden has decreased among men and increased among women...... One possible explanation as to why men are less harmed by tobacco is snus. Snus isn't as dangerous as smoking, and it's much more common among men than women."

This will be interesting to see how this goes vs how swedish match is going for the same thing even tho swedish match is already being used as a harm reduction benchmark for other products (but is not being formally recognized)
