This is far less dangerous than expected - snus gives no increased mortality (translated with google original link below)
    https://www.ranablad.no/snus/helse/l.../s/5-42-325934

Local News - 5 kr for 5 weeks
It shows a new study in the Lancet, writes research.no .
Tobacco head of the Finnish Institute of Public Health, Karl Erik Lund, believes that communication about risk is getting worse.
"But for us who have been following the research on snuff in recent decades, this is not very surprising," says Karl Erik Lund to research.no.
Global Burden of Disease, a research collaboration, has for the first time calculated the number of deaths that may be associated with nuisance. And the study concludes with the following: Estimated mortality of snuff is zero.
The researchers could not demonstrate that using snus causes an increased risk of any of the diseases included in their calculation basis.
According to research director Karl Erik Lund, the result was as expected. He has even called for calculations for the risk of diseases of snuff from his colleagues on the health side for a long time.
Lund believes the study is an unconditional happy news.
"It's gratifying that a hard-charged healthcare nevertheless does not have to prepare for a new epidemic of tobacco diseases," he told the site.
However, the researchers found an increased risk of two types of cancer of another type of tobacco that is not cigarettes - high tobacco poison tobacco.
This is a tobacco type used in India, Pakistan and North Africa, giving it an increased risk of cancer in the lip, oral cavity and esophagus. This type of slab tobacco, which has a much higher content of carcinogenic nitrosamines than snus. And it takes 48,000 lives a year.
Furthermore, it appears that passive smoking caused 883,000 deaths in 2016. And 6.3 million people died as a result of smoking.

So despite low harm 0-5% risk only where snus is concerned and despite almost 200 years of research and use of snus - and despite having some of the lowest rates of smoking in the world- and all the other positives that snus brings to the whole quit smoking thing...

Snus may be held back in the EU tobacco directive because of a bribery scandal and because of vaping?

I still dont know why I am continually surprised by the overall stupidity and selfishness of tobacco control zealots
Swedish snus wants place in EU tobacco directive Ė EURACTIV.com

Smoking leads to less increase in life expectancy for less educated women
    https://www.eurekalert.org/pub_relea...-slt121117.php

"Deaths from smoking in Sweden has decreased among men and increased among women...... One possible explanation as to why men are less harmed by tobacco is snus. Snus isn't as dangerous as smoking, and it's much more common among men than women."

This will be interesting to see how this goes vs how swedish match is going for the same thing even tho swedish match is already being used as a harm reduction benchmark for other products (but is not being formally recognized)

Snus is now more popular than smoking in Norway (jan article)

Snus tobacco: Healthier than cigarettes, but banned by the EU

    Swedish Snus: Saviour or Smokescreen?

Article which exaggerates the harms of snus (harm by snus is overall about %5 for cancers etc (way down from actually smoking) and am not sure if that also includes the acceptable margine of error which also sits at around 5-10% depending on the research) scroll up through snus news section to find out more

Article is also pissy that sweden has what is termed a parallel tobacco trade which article calls illegal because it contravenes the FCTC (WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control) found here if you want to read it WHO | WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control

Oh and blah blah Big tobacco (sif surreptitiously pharma funded WHO is any better pretending they have our best interest where tobacco control is concerned )

so snus is now under fire over cornulin because of this study

    https://www.sciencedaily.com/release...0309095517.htm

cornulin is associated with cancer - but the study concludes with a we dont know what this means - give us more money to research it

Problem with this being that research has already shown risk for mouth and throat cancer is negligible and studies that look at snus dont adjust for previous smoking patterns before using snus

cornulin is also a relative unknown protein that they dont seem to know much about -

    Some extra reading here

    and

    another new study

Smoking and snus use among Finnish young males
    http://www.tobaccoinduceddiseases.org/Smoking-and-snus-use-among-Finnish-young-males,83805,0,2.html

    which concludes with

    Conclusions:
Exclusive snus use as well as dual use of cigarette and snus were significantly higher than expected. Educational level did not correlate with exclusive snus use.The notably high prevalence of snus usage seems to reflect the aspiring change of trend among tobacco consumers.

    Submissions for the FDA call

Statement from FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, M.D., on efforts to reduce tobacco use, especially among youth, by exploring options to address the role of flavors ‒ including menthol ‒ in tobacco products

An article about what the submission call is about

FDA takes first steps to limit flavorings in tobacco- FDA asks for input on limiting cigars, chewing tobacco, and e-cigarettes, too
(Which is extremely stupid if you are looking at things from a harm reduction perspective)
