LOL let the speculation begin !!!

Until the late second year ( without DNA testing) you are never going to be really sure of sex , from what I have learned, they dont get adult plumage properly til about 18 months , and the beak can change colour anytime after 12 months or later ... so until then its a guessing game usually ... a good breeder will always include DNA testing in the initial price and have a certificate from the testing lab that matches the leg ring

Dan , although being a "cousin' of the Ringneck family , they are apparently much more chill in nature, and are a completely different sub-species ( lol sorry am laughing while I type this because Tuco has a little rubber duck friend she has taken to and was most indignant when he/she just dropped it off the coffee table ... most devastated her friend left !!! rightly restored to her play area on the table and is once again copping a beaking ) Anyway .. yep a bit more chill, with apparently a much sweeter nature ... more logical and less instinctual as well ? They are kind of a little secret in the parrot world I guess? certainly nowhere near as many of them about as normal ringnecks.

One of the main things I quizzed David ( breeder ) on was the sex difference as I was originally presented with the choice of an older male and a just weaned female... according to him there isnt a huge amount of difference between adults kept as companions as it depends more on the interaction between the bird and "owner" , but instinctively the Male role is to serve the female during nesting and rearing .. she hardly leaves the nest at all, just to be fed by the Male and in turn feed the chicks .

They can be feisty, but socialisation is the key apparently ... they are not uber affectionate cuddly birds , but they love to be in everything and like to please you ... Tuco will go thru the bluffing stage like any growing bird ... seasonally tho , without a mate to assume the different roles hormone changes will make a small difference , but nowehere near like it would if they are not socialised ( crosses fingers lol )

It will be an "interesting " journey I am sure

Tuco is Psittacula alexandri fasciata one of the 8 subspecies of alexandri ( and to really confuse shyte the Alexandrine Parrot isnt a member of the family lol .. they are Psittacula eupatria.
The Indian Ringneck is Psittacula krameri as you can see they are a fair bit apart on the parrot evolutionary scale . although they look similar in shape .

Closest relation to Tuco are the Derbian Parrots , which share mainly the same colouration and character but are much larger

Moustache's are actually threatened in the wild now due to harvesting for the pet trade ( not so much nowadays... and in Australia there has been no wild stock imported for decades thank god) and destruction by farmers of the birds as "pests" and their habitat ....

Thats a million dollar idea (at least a houseboats worth).
Shame im not a bird whisperer

EDIT: Not that silly bird dog idea that's just crazy. I meant the prominent display tied to emotions/external stimuli that's got potential)

LOL OK so I went to go see Charlie an older Moustache parrot ( well he was only 2 but it was older than ones I had considered ) he was nice but a bit stand offish which is to be expected , he would have settled in tho ... and while I was there also met his littler sister who was about 14 weeks ... a little flighty but again just cos I was new ...

I actually spent nearly 4 hours chatting with the breeder, absolutely terrific guy ... So after meeting with Charlie and his sister , David the breeder took another little one out , this was a lone egg double clutch ( the Moustache pair laid another egg after the previous babies were hatched then removed 2 weeks late for hand raising ) ... and this little one took an absolute shine to me ... within a minute he/she was up my arm onto my shoulder nibbling my beard and ears and making content noises ... its DNA is in but not due back til the end of the week or so will know then if is a boy or girl ... breeder thinks boy , I think girl .. lets see whos right

Anyway I decided on a unisex name ... Tuco ... or for those old enough to remember George of the Jungle cartoons

( Tookie Tookie for short ? long? more informal moments

anyhow here is Tuco older sister on Davids Arm ( but they look pretty identical lol )

Here is what she.he will grow into

Black beak at sexual maturity = female .... orange beak= male But with DNA we find out quicker than waiting 2-3 years lol

Settling in well ... he/she is still on 1 morning hand feed of baby mix plus browsing the rest of the day ...

Tuco took the travel well too which was a big ask of a really young bird ...
Wheee! welcome little Tuco - lovely news Simon

Oh god. Don't start the age old birds and smell debate.

No scent receptors. Like having no taste buds, but ol factory.
