    Please explain: nicotine salts?

Can someone please tell me what nicotine salts really are? Has anyone used them?

i have tried the GT method of adding citric acid to my nic

    it converts freebase to salts

    definitely smoother

i wasn't too scientific about it, just added a dash of CA to my juice [GT says heating in PG first dissolves quicker though]

just try it, as with everything

Nicotine as we normally use it is mildly alkaline - about pH 8.0 give or take a little. (definition of an alkaloid, more or less I guess)

If you add an acid to an alkaline solution (alkaline solutions are also called "base solutions") it forms a salt.

If you did basic chemistry in high school (a long time ago for some of us I know) you might remember adding an acid to a base to form a salt - the classic is adding hydrochloric acid to sodium hydroxide (lye) to form sodium chloride (table salt). This why if you are exposed to lye you might wash it off with vinegar and water (I actually had to do this once).

What base and acid are mixed together predicts what salt you will get - in this case citric acid + nicotine = nicotine citrate. Using different acids will give different salts which will effect the nicotine differently.

The pH of nicotine effects how we absorb it. The more alkaline it is (eg pH 8 and above) the easier it is absorbed through the linings of the mouth and nose (mucosa)

The lower the pH the better it is absorbed by inhaling it into the lungs. The nicotine in cigarette smoke has a pH between 5.6 and 6.3. This is partly achieved by treating the tobacco with ammonia, effectively 'freebasing' the nicotine.

Nicotine salts have a more neutral pH (around 7.4) but the main effect of creating a nicotine salt will be to stabilise it. Absorption through the mucosa might be reduced which could effect the throat hit and make it "smoother". It will most likely have an effect on how liquids age or steep, since the salt is more stable than the nicotine molecule on its own.

I'm not a chemist, so some of these details might be bit fuzzy.

Im just wondering if there are any unwanted side effects

Have you seen for example Nude Armur v3 has moved from argon in v1 and leur syringes in v2 to adding ascorbic acid to extend the shelf life of nic....

Im actually trying to decide which version to order for my next nic order...leaning more towards v2 based largely on my ignorance of chemistry

just in case I ever run out of my lovely Nude Nic.... could a certainly rather unpleasant peppery nicotine - that is stored away for an incredibly desperate time... this could be improved with adding citric acid... (abscorbic acid? vit C? )
