Most larger contact coils (greather than ~2.5mm ID) are built with 0.35mm Kanthal A, which is between 27AWG (0.36mm) and 28AWG (0.32mm). For smaller coils I'll use 30AWG, and for real micro coils I'll use 32AWG.

It all comes down to how many turns I want for a given target resistance. To find that out I use a helix calculator that I put together... but for example, if I want a 1 ohm coil on a 2.5mm ID with posts 5mm apart, then I'd need either:
    • 8 wraps of 0.35mm
    • 4 wraps of 30AWG
    • 2.5 wraps of 32AWG

Or say for example I want a 1.2 ohm coil and the ID is 1mm with posts 5mm apart, then:
    • 20 wraps of 0.35mm
    • 10.5 wraps of 30AWG
    • 7 wraps of 32AWG

0.35mm or 28AWG is definitely easier to work with as it holds its shape better. But it generally works best on larger contact coils. Sometimes you just have to step down to 30AWG or 32AWG.

I used that when I started out.

The spreadsheet I'm working on at the moment includes ribbon wire and few extra features. I'll post it up here when it's done.

    Now, where's everyone else's coils?
