Bottom, horizontal single coiled "clearo" KISS wick

    KISS wick

Firstly, this was just to see whether the tendency of coils to clog because they run dry (not dry-hit) can be overcome, as I was reading an article on ECF (I think it was) that this is one of the causes of clogging. Another is the flavours caramelise (especially the darker ones).

So I did some research on wicking materials to ensure I was using the right wick, and found that rayon is an excellent transporter of liquid, but doesn't hold it well (act as a juice reservoir). Cotton absorbs it well, but doesn't transport it well. Silica absorbs it well, but doesn't transport it even as good as cotton (which is why cotton is often used instead of silica). What silica does do extremely well though is withstand high temperatures, something the other two materials do not.

Now, when the coil gets clogged I dry burn, what I have usually done is remove and discard the cotton wick, dry burn then replace the cotton wick with a new bit, and have done this every day / second day for awhile. What, I thought, if I use the standard coil with silica wick (enabling easy dry burns) and use a transportation layer above the coil/silica wick made from rayon?

Friday I dry burned a discarded, used 1,8 ohm coil, boiled it for a minute to remove any residue, rolled a piece of rayon so that it ended up between 2 and 2.5mm wet (as rayon shrinks when saturated), placed that on top of the coil after discarding the "flavour" wicks, reassembled and "boom" ... excellent performance

Whether or not it solves the clogging remains to be seen, but it has doubled the performance of the standard coil. This was firstly implemented on an EVOD coil and now the eGo-ONE RBA.

    Obligatory blurred photos

The used EVOD coil with the obvious signs of clogging.

The coil just after a dry burn.

The amount of rayon I'm using for the wick.

The rayon rolled up and primed with juice to ensure it keeps it's shape.

The rayon wick laid into the EVOD wick grooves and above the original wick/coil.

The coil assembly with the rayon wick trimmed. You can see the two, distinct wicks.

Aligns perfectly with KISS and has a great performance improvement.

Should work with any bottom, horizontal coil with exposed wicks (not only EVOD) Works on the eGo-ONE RBA for instance ...
