    Zna30 --> zna40

    So a while ago I stuffed some foil in the mechanical reverse polarity protection cup in my ZNA30 so I could use flat top 18650s. Took a week or so but I eventually put a battery in backwards and smelled that burning electronics smell that technicians loathe.

    Instead of ordering a replacement DNA30 board I opted for the DNA40 so I could try out temperature control. Also it has reverse polarity protection in case I ever decide to be clever again.

    The board arrived today and I've been cursing all night but I finally finished. Some highlights:

    1) I cracked the 3D printed PCB insulator while trimming it to fit around a resistor that was taller than the components on the previous board. Kapton tape to the rescue.

    2) The button on the replacement DNA40 board was very squishy unlike the nice clicky button on the fried DNA30 board so I swapped them.

    3) While doing that I tore the flexible PCB connecting the OLED display to the DNA40. The displays looked the same so I swapped them too.

    4) Many, many hours Dremelling the plastic cover to fit the new board.

    5) I need to buy some more bandaids for the workshop.

    That's enough for tonight. Vaping away happily on Kanthal. I'll try a nickel build and temperature control tomorrow.

    Can we assume you started with a Evil ZNA clone, or Da real McCoy ?

    The real McCoy. Which made the burning smell even more distressing.

    I tried the same with my zna 30 and then realised the original plug wouldn't fit and refitted the dna30

    Because he chose a board without reverse polarity protection and I foolishly circumvented his mechanical protection. Read the first sentence in my post.

    Yeah without doubt the trickiest part is modifying that to get the fit just right... If you don't have to do SMD (surface mount device) soldering rework like I did because the replacement PCB switch was shitty. It is doable though. Just lots of minor filing/grinding, check for fit and repeat.
