THE electronic cigarette market is booming despite expert warnings "e-cigs" are no joke-smokes.
Thousands of Australians are getting sucked into the new craze, with the biggest Australian distributor revealing they are raking in over a million dollars per year on their booming product.
Adam Royle, sales manager for Electronic Cigarettes Australia says their business is growing exponentially.
He said as the largest local distributor of the cigarette alternative, they were selling tens of thousands of units every year, often as aid to quitting.
"They are becoming more and more popular, with the price of actual cigarettes and people more concerned about health," he said.
But experts are concerned, as more of us embrace the "vaping" phenomenon, that we don't know enough about the health risks of nicotine, the ingredient delivered by the gadget.
President of the Australian Medical Association Dr Steve Hambleton says he's concerned non-smokers will see the new smokeless e-cigarette as a harmless device. The product supplies the user with nicotine vapour and has yet to be approved by the Therapeutic Drugs Administration. Dr Hambleton believes they could still be dangerous to your health.
"There are no studies done even though there are millions being sold, there's no proof they are not carcinogenic, they shouldn't be sold until studies have been done," he said.

He's under the misconception that ecigs are a medicine, probably because he thinks smoking is a disease.

Smoking is not a disease, smoking causes disease. Vaping is a much safer alternative to smoking.

His lie was that no studies have been done, and that they haven't been proven to not be carcinogenic. There are many studies that have been conducted.

His opinion that they should not be sold until tests are done means that he is basically an NRT shill.

'Dr' Hambleton sounds like a typical university shielded retard. He must be quoting 10yo US material to come up with that gem and gunning for some grant money to waste. As well as not cottoning on to the fact no local suppliers can legally sell nic.

Going to find a brick wall to bang my head against.

    So many stupid people....

You can feel the temperature rising. The rate of articles appearing seems to be growing exponentially. I just hope the community keeps growing to keep pace so that we can mount a formidable defense when the time comes. Anyone made contact with those guys fighting the law changes in the US yet? Might be time to start forming some strong international alliances. They seem to be much more organized over there and ready to tackle the issues as they arise. Too often we have the attitude of "she'll be right mate" but not this time I fear. Political action is needed, letters to local members and so on to make our presence felt. We are in real danger of being swept aside by yet another law that attacks personal freedom.

You have to love the language of the journalist also "sucked in" "fad" "joke-smokes"....

And to say "we don't know enough about nicotine" WTF??? It's outright propaganda!

If only the retailer named had enough money to sue!

I concur second_chance. I think we need to all pitch in to get involved in ATACA and learn from CASAA's example!!!
I've written to fed health minister and shadow, Tas health minister and shadow. Working on something for Andrew Wilkie also.
I think if we had an umbrella name to work under we would be able to get listened to more.
