A curious Italian Ecig Usage Survey Result

I don't know what to make of this, but a survey of Italian ecig users appears to claim only 10.6%* of those who have used ecigs have actually stopped smoking traditional cigarettes.

    Google Translate

I found that a little hard to believe - seems very low compared to other studies. For example, survey results published in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine show 31.0% of 222 respondents who tried ecigs were still not smoking cigarettes after 6 months. Some of these people were long term smokers who had tried to quit unsuccessfully multiple times.

There certainly appears to be high awareness of ecigs and ecig use in Italy. Maybe a bunch of people have been exposed to some of the crappier products available? Or how many were actually considering quitting vs. a casual puff out of curiosity?

The Italian results come from a survey data processed by the Osservatorio Fumo Institute of Health, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, the Research Institute Mario Negri and the Italian Society of Tabaccologia. Might need to do a bit of digging around on them and this survey, but my Italian is about as good as my Mandarin - and Google Translate, as great as it is, doesn't always get it right.

*10.6% is still substantially higher than "recognised" NRT's.

I am always a little bit wary when "Organizations" publish the results of a survey without actually outlining the survey methodology .
Duration of survey? , numbers of participants?, socio demographics etc .
The three organisations listed ( and yes my Italian is crap too ) do read however like , the equivalent of Quit, the Health Ministry , and the Society of Tobacco Studies ?
All of whom have vested interests in the "Failure" of electronic cigarettes .

For all we know from this article , the survey could have been run over a three day period where participants were handed crappy cigalikes and free cigarettes ... then told to report what happened !

Plus it depends on you definition of quitting. I'll have a ciggy once in a blue moon just because. I don't crave them, don't need them but every couple of months someone will be smoking and I'll have one just because.

I'm sure that if you skewed the definition properly, you could make a survey that would be highly in favor of Fatman being a slim bugger!

Italy like Spain and Greece has quite a culture of cigarette smoking so perhaps the temptations are ameliorating the positive effects of ecigs.

Apart from the aforementioned lack of n= whatnotery, I think the googlationi is not quite al dente, so it is permisso that the fumari numeralis are defenestrated?

Still, quite alarming that the Italians have decreased their consumption of blondes over the last decade...

Speak for yourself, mathsguy. My beautiful blonde girlfriend is about to spend three weeks in Italy and I'd like to have her back unconsumed, thank you very much
