    Media Attention

There is a growing interest in E-Cigs Worldwide and Australian Media has caught on. No longer can we hide unseen it seems.

In this thread I would prefer if we could put all our personal dislikes of each other aside and try and get a working stratergy together for the benefit off all.

There is big money involved and the fight will be dirty aspecially behind the scenes.

We were sort of tricked by the SBS show as we were sort of portrayed as pathetic yobs by hanging in a Pub and showing off mods contrasted against the besuited Prof with all his books and the respectability of his Ivory Tower expertise.

On television these things come across as the editors want it to.

The Yanks and Poms have high level experts in many relevant fields and are still struggling in their fight for common sense.

We really need to have some people who have all the information at their fingertips and can calmly respond to questions without becoming flustered.

On television a lot of emphasis is placed on looks unfortunately so we need to be careful in that regard.

I personally would think that a Pub is not a good place for interviews as it can be used against us in sneaky ways.

I hope we can put differences aside for just a little while and try and come up with a way forward.

Please put your thoughts forward as this is not going away, well it might but not in a way that we will like.

    RC

A good start might be opening some strong channels of communication with the American/ UK lobby groups and spokespeople. Get them active on Aussie forums and aware of the threats we are facing. Familiarize ourselves with strategies and tactics to fight an effective campaign in the public domain. No doubt we all have the passion but we need the humility to learn from others as well.

The more collective voices we have the stronger the influence that can be exerted

Ok, this has dragged me back to AVF.

All these new vapers need to realise they still have not outgrown the "OMG this is amazing we have to tell everyone and hand out business cards to people to get them to come to the forums and vape meets and quit cigarettes because these taste yummy OMG" hysterical noob phase.

This is going to affect a lot more people than those who post (or choose not to post) on AVF.
Even if it is just Elaine Keller's email address.
We need nominated sources so that if you are contacted by the media or for comment you should refer them to one place.

I actually think that the friendliness of a group of vapors meeting in a pub shows the social aspect that vapors have, and far from pathetic.

As opposed to the Professor in his ivory tower who would be out of touch with the general reality of daily life.

The following suggestion isn't based on any particular opinion of mine re: the SBS segment; just the issue of media generally and AVF.

Perhaps a poll needs to be taken - preceded by nominations for AVF community spokespeople. Nominees can accept or reject the nomination and detail in what capacity they would be prepared to participate - e.g. tv or radio or print interviews (or all mediums).

Nominees can post a bit about themselves in a dedicated thread; outlining their relevant experience, skills and abilities.

The poll to follow would be based on the nominees who have accepted the nomination and from that poll X number of candidates would be selected. If there were enough votes for each candidate (and each member could vote for multiple candidates), then all would operate in the role of spokesperson and co-ordinate with overseas groups.

There could be a specific thread on AVF specifically for journos and such that would contain the usernames of these spokespeople; with an invitation to PM them. Each spokesperson would keep the community up to date with their activities in this regard; co-ordinate SBS type situations etc.

It would be an important role, not one to be taken lightly.

Just as a side-point, as well as how we portray ourselves "out there", we also need to carefully consider how we conduct ourselves in here. If we're going to point journos and the general public here, first impressions count. It can be Russian Roulette at times in that regard. This is just as difficult and thorny an issue IMO; as it is for any online community associated with a particular pursuit.

We just need to think smart about all of this.. The last thing we want is government attention or the attention from the health departments / simon chapman / TGA etc.
