Why does every news article and current affair segment always portray a "public health" academic and the "users" of electronic cigarettes.
What's their thinking?
Why does the media intentionally avoid academics that support electronic cigarettes?

Because they are lazy, because challenging dogma requires effort and commitment, because they have little real interest in the subject beyond its value as controversy. There are always certain sections of the community that get armchair rides in the media, whereas others don't.
But things can change.
