Authorities warn on dangers of e-cigarettes

More fear mongering, but local now, from The Advocate in Tassie ...

E-CIGARETTES might seem like a healthy way to quit smoking but they can be dangerous, and even fatal.

National and Tasmanian health authorities are concerned about the use of e-cigarettes in Australia, due to the lack of evidence on their safety and efficacy.

Director of Public Health, Dr Roscoe Taylor, said recent tests of products available in Tasmania had revealed some samples of the liquid, also known as e-juice and e-liquid, had enough nicotine to cause serious illness, or even death if swallowed.

"Parents using e-cigarettes should be very careful as small children may find the liquids enticing as some have fruit- flavoured or sweet additives," Dr Taylor said.

"Children in other parts of Australia have come to harm ingesting the liquid and at least one death has already been reported overseas."

Your comment went something along the lines of... There are plenty of "normal" household chemicals around the house that can cause serious health issues or death if swallowed. right ?

I'd like to know about the Australian children that have come to harm?

at the moment, it's seeming like 2 steps forward and 1 step backwards where the media is concerned. that's a great improvement on what seemed like 1 step forward and 4 steps backward of even 6 months ago.

"had enough nicotine to cause serious illness, or even death if swallowed.", however if vaped the liquid had enough nicotine to prevent serious illness by getting a smoker off cigarettes.

    This comment is awaiting moderation:

It would be great to see more articles that reference some of the more recent studies into personal vaporisers and nicotine, rather than dragging the old outdated "we don't know enough" "not enough proof" "highly dangerous" comments from the intrenched health industry. Doesn't seem to be much independent journalism in articles about e-cigs these days, more toe the party line. There are some telling links provided by other posters that seldom get a mention in the mainstream media.

I couldn't have put it better myself. Seriously. I get so irked that all I could write would be something sarky.
    That's a great response.
