More dismal findings on #nicotine replacement therapy. This time with pharmacists Elsevier

    Results
Ten eligible studies with a total of 20,133 participants were identified. Results suggest pharmacy personnel delivered non-pharmacological interventions offering behavioral counseling or support for tobacco use cessation could be beneficial, particularly from 6 months follow-up onwards. Combining these non-pharmacological with pharmacological interventions could also be beneficial. The results for the effectiveness of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) were mixed with some findings suggesting intervention benefits, and others suggesting no clear benefit.

    Conclusions
Pharmacy personnel-delivered non-pharmacological tobacco use cessation interventions offering behavioral counseling or support, and those combining these non-pharmacological interventions with NRT/pharmacological approaches, are potentially effective. No clear benefit has been demonstrated on pharmacy personnel-delivered NRT interventions. However, these findings are based on a very limited ????? number of studies and hence more evidence is needed before more robust conclusions can be made.

How many research projects and millions of people are they going to review before they decide that NRTs are not particularly effective? I'd be laughing, if it wasn't for the amount of research dollars being wasted on the search for the Holy Grail, that could be put towards more important research on just about anything.

If following 20 000+ people using the same products and services doesn't show a trend one way or the other, then the only conclusion that can be drawn is that the products and services are ineffective and the few success stories were an anomaly.

It is absolutely ludicrous that these people are continuing to get the backing of the government, the ANTZ even tell people that cold turkey is the most effective way to quit and in the next breath push NRT as the approved method that people should be sticking with if cold turkey isn't working.

Ohh cold turkey didn't work for you? Here try the Quit Line and some approved NRT, it won't work for you either but we will feel better because we can get more funding to tell you it doesn't work.
