Looks like they are picking on pedestrian precincts arth_d - they wouldn't have a cat in hells chance of making any rules for areas adjoining a road.

Rundle Mall in Adelaide is "Smoke Free"... Has been for ages so this could actually happen but I would imagine actually enforcing it could be a problem.
The cops can't even stop heroin being sold on the streets and they're going to fine smokers? lols

But if they did, Were would those "rough looking" people that hang out at the Melbourne train station go instead?

Of course they're going to fine smokers if they can. They'll make more money from that than stopping heroin deals.

Ha, I was vaping there (just outside the entrance to get into Harvey Norman) for around 10 mins. A few odd looks but nothing of it really...

Same here in Brisbane...the Queen St Mall has been smoke free for years now. It was funny when I was smoking and about to walk across from the Casino side of George Street to the Mall and you would have a sea of smokers all congregated together...looked like a bushfire from a distance.....and they did fine you if you were still smoking when you crossed the road.

To be fair, it's the antisocial element that has most behind smoking in malls being banned in a few cities.
Things would be different banning smoking near office blocks where cashed up voters and office workers smoke I bet.

    thinking about this further...

Why is it OK to alienate smokers? You couldn't do it to disabled or minorities or anybody for that matter so why is it OK to kick around smokers and constantly bombard them with negative messages?

I get why "they" do... To make them quit but maybe the quit smoking people should have a good hard look at themselves and ask, What are they really doing?

When I was smoking I felt like a "leper" and I truly believe that had a real negative impact on my life. Enough already... Time to change the tune!

Here's an idea, What about some real help. Introduce them to something that reduces harm to themselves and others???

So what can reduce harm, simulate smoking and provide that naughty stuff Nicotine all at the same time? ................. !!!Idiots!!!

They'd just ban vaping too if you asked them if that was OK.
Just like in the US where vaping is more popular and they have banned it where ever there's smoking bans.
