Small study on 2nd gen ecigs published 29/10/14

    "Conclusion
In a series of controlled lab sessions with e-cig-naïve tobacco smokers, second-generation e-cigs were shown to be immediately and highly effective in reducing abstinence-induced cigarette craving and withdrawal symptoms, while not resulting in increases in eCO. Ad libitum use of e-cigs—in between and until six months after the lab sessions—resulted in remarkable reductions in or (biologically confirmed) complete abstinence from tobacco smoking in almost half of the participants who had no intention to quit smoking. Eight months after the start of the study 21% of all participants were completely abstinent from tobacco cigarettes. Similar reduction/cessation rates were obtained with guided versus non-guided switching to e-cigs. Part of the observed efficacy of e-cigs in this study may be related to the fact that they allowed to maintain relatively high blood nicotine levels and showed an excellent experienced benefits/complaints ratio, especially in comparison with continued tobacco smoking. Larger randomized controlled trials in smokers wanting to quit and in clinical groups of people suffering from smoking-related disease are now needed to confirm and expand these encouraging observations."

This study really needs more attention. It's the first RCT that comes close to reflecting real world use, it's the first study on 2nd gen (all previous ones have been pissy 1st gen) and has extremely impressive results, 37% effective for complete cessation. Only studying people who didn't want to quit and using one Dekang flavour only. Imagine what the results might be with a variety of flavours and including people who were keen on quitting?

Yes. Turkish blend only. Early 2nd gen, a Kanger T2 at 2.5 ohm on a 650 mah ego, fixed voltage. 18 mg/ml. But still far better than a cigalike which every other RCT so far has used.

Another small study using 2nd gen devices by Polosa et al using smokers UNWILLING to quit. Click on link for full study.

    http://www.biomedcentral.com/content...58-14-1159.pdf

    "Method
We conducted a prospective proof-of-concept study monitoring modifications in smoking
behaviour of 50 smokers (unwilling to quit) switched onto PVs. Participants attended five
    study visits: baseline, week-4, week-8, week-12 and week-24. Number of cigarettes/day
(cigs/day) and exhaled carbon monoxide (eCO) levels were noted at each visit. Smoking
reduction/abstinence rates, product usage, adverse events and subjective opinions of these
    products were also reviewed.

    Results
Sustained 50% and 80% reduction in cigs/day at week-24 was reported in 15/50 (30%) and
    7/50 (14%) participants with a reduction from 25cigs/day to 6cigs/day (p < 0.001) and
    3cigs/day (p < 0.001), respectively. Smoking abstinence (self-reported abstinence from
cigarette smoking verified by an eCO ≤10 ppm) at week-24 was observed in 18/50 (36%)
participants, with 15/18 (83.3%) still using their PVs at the end of the study. Combined 50%
reduction and smoking abstinence was shown in 33/50 (66%) participants. Throat/mouth
    irritation (35.6%), dry throat/mouth (28.9%), headache (26.7%) and dry cough (22.2%) were
frequently reported early in the study, but waned substantially by week-24. Participants’
perception and acceptance of the products was very good.

    Conclusion
The use of second generation PVs substantially decreased cigarette consumption without
causing significant adverse effects in smokers not intending to quit."

The above outstanding results were gained by the subjects using EGO/CE4's and 9mg/ml Tobacco flavoured eliquid. Imagine if they had better hardware and more flavours and strengths to choose from.
