The first real-world figures from the UK might be the beginning of the end of the "gateway" argument.

The gateway proponents held out till the bitter end.

Now there are just the the "think of the wee children" proponents.

I think the war is being won. I wonder though how long it will take for Australia to find out.

Yes, there is a lot of data becoming available now in the UK where e-cigs have been taken up in a big way in the absence of punitive regulation. Smoking rates have dropped markedly since their introduction, especially among youth. They will be looking at us now as the test case for stricter controls. I suspect our smoking rates haven't budged nearly as much.

I think our smoking rates have gone up, especially among young people. I saw a graphic that the number of 12-17 year olds smoking went up by 36% from 2010 to 2013 (to a total of 58,000 young persons). It's citing ABS figures.

So much for "plain" packs, what a failure. That was the claim that Chappo was betting on, that it would scare young people off cigs.

Pity they won't be able to try to give up using vaping, because our Health departments would prefer they smoke than try a much safer alternative.
