Here's $3 million for the Plain Packs lobby to fight back against the nay-sayers

Because we haven't blown enough money on plain packs (and world trade lawyers), federal government just gave the lobby another $3m to fight back:

"It's hard to imagine a less suitable person (Melanie Wakefield) to be judge and jury. Even if Wakefield wasn't personally committed to the policy - and she clearly is - she would be biased towards finding a positive effect because all her previous work has concluded that there should be a positive effect. Her appointment makes a mockery of the concept of independent review (see also Linda Bauld and the smoking ban). How can the government justify spending three millions bucks on this farce? "

Velvet Glove, Iron Fist: Nice work if you can get it

Normally I wouldn't care, but Chappo trumpetting that the decline in cig sales is due to his policy (not vaping, not taxes), it just gets me.

That 3 million is our money. The money smokers pay in tax on their smokes goes to this kind of shit.

It's so ironic, they think it's ethical to bully and punish people for the weakness, or choice, to continue using a product that might harm them in 20 years time. Punish them financially and then use the money they steal from them (mostly the poorest of people) to pay a bunch of flush puritans to go round and round the 'smoking is bad and aren't we clever for saving you all' hamster wheel.

There are schools and hospitals that could be built with this money, or any number of worthy projects that might actually benefit the citizens who provide this money.

We must never forget that harassment and humiliation of smokers is being done "for their own good".

It's purely coincidence that all money earmarked to help smokers ends up lining the pockets of anti-smoking advocates, activists and vendors of pharmaceutical alternatives.

People by the way, who've never been so poor they've had to scrape up coins to buy a packet, or pick up discarded butts to try and smoke them.

We live in a world of grandiose hypocrites.
