China’s E-Cigarette Boom Lacks Oversight for Safety - The New York Times

Interesting (long) read on Manufacturing in China. An explanation on the good, not so good and seriously dangerous practices in the factories that make what we vape.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2014/12/14/bu...r-safety-.html

"SHENZHEN, China — In a grimy workshop, among boiling vats of chemicals, factory workers are busy turning stainless steel rods into slender tube casings, a crucial component of electronic cigarettes. Not long ago, Skorite Electronics was a tiny firm struggling to produce pen parts. Today, it is part of an enormous — and virtually unregulated — supply chain centered here that produces about 90 percent of the world’s e-cigarettes.

This year, Chinese manufacturers are expected to ship more than 300 million e-cigarettes to the United States and Europe, where they will reach the shelves of Walmart, 7-Eleven stores, gas station outlets and so-called vaping shops.

The devices have become increasingly popular, particularly among young adults, and yet hundreds of e-cigarette manufacturers in China operate with little oversight. Experts say flawed or sloppy manufacturing could account for some of the heavy metals, carcinogens and other dangerous compounds, such as lead, tin and zinc, that have been detected in some e-cigarettes."........................

I think it's gratifying to see people take the subject matter seriously. As long as the take-home is "make it safer" rather than "make it go away"

Try not to blame the Chinese. We are a capitalism and capitalism wants everything, and we want it now and at the cheapest price.

100% agree Tugboat, we drive the market and they respond accordingly.

The article could easily have read "In a wooden barn in the backwoods of Texas, Billy Bob Jones, a former crack addict is mixing his own brand of boutique e-liquid in an old kitchen sink alongside drying raccoon hides"

Probably closer to the truth too

Glad I use rebuildables. No plastic, paint, solder, insulation painted resistance coils(WTF?), glue. Plus I do trust that most of the small artisan juice manufacturers based in California would not knowingly use a harmful ingredient in their juice. That end of the market would not tolerate it (not all out of health consciousness; some purely out of fashion and pretence) and they'd have too much to lose.

Though the acceptance of cheap quality disposable products is in general an indictment on our consumerist society. People in general are happy to buy cheap and replace often, rather than buy one the ever diminishing number of things that are made to last years or lifetimes. Sure it keeps million of Chinese (in this example) in jobs and growing out of poverty, but ever growing production and consumption of essentially frivolous crap is an economic bubble that must burst eventually, to the detriment of all, even those who are gaining from it or not negatively effected now.
