Mental Health & Vaping - Louise Ross via Clive Bates

Clive Bates' guest blogger Louise Ross from Leicester Stop Smoking Service. Louise is a wonderful advocate of ecigs.

"Louise Ross: why shouldn’t people with poor mental health have the same opportunities as everyone else?"

"Co-creating new opportunities for people with mental ill health
In the last few weeks, we’ve taken some great strides forward with getting ready for vaping (as part of the smokefree strategy) in our local NHS mental health unit.

It must have been a year ago when I was exploring how easy or hard it would be to change the smokefree policy to permit the use of ecigs, for in-patients particularly, and it’s taken this long to move forward. But there has been lots going on in the meantime, and I thought you might like to hear about this, and maybe offer suggestions."

Keep reading below, it's well worth it....

*wonders how the mentally ill and others on welfare will vape when the basics card spreads.. as expected tba in comming weeks ... then wanders off
“But I don’t want to go among mad people," Alice remarked.
"Oh, you can’t help that," said the Cat: "we’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad."
"How do you know I’m mad?" said Alice.
"You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn’t have come here.”

I think this is really essential. Many people with mental health issues self medicate with nicotine. They have a very high smoking rate. And the problem is that by the time they to hospital they really have crashed big time. Its pretty hard for them to get themselves together when they are then going through nicotine withdrawal as well. My sons psychiatrist used to get me to take him outside the hospital for a ciggie (once he was stable enough) before he would see him so he would get some sense out of him. It was also a great way to get him to be more compliant with his treatment.

When you consider that this section of the community is one of the poorest they also have a lot to gain by vaping.
