You can prove anything with statistics

No conclusive evidence that e-cigs tempt teens to smoke - Health News - NHS Choices

......the study.... describes people who had ever tried an e-cigarette as "e-cigarette users" and people who have taken even one puff of a cigarette as "smokers".

It's really really flimsy statistics. A cohort of 16 people being described in terms of percentages? Any statistician would demolish that.

Totally rediculous 16 people prove nothing. Who knows maybe they read a bodgy newspaper story and decided vaping was more dangerous!

The intention behind the research is fine. There might just be a group, unlike the typical vaper, who tries nicotine in one way (e.g. vaping), and then goes on to get it by smoking. It would be interesting to know that info. But they've just gone about it all wrong.

This research cannot prove that one leads to another. However seeing they've got only 16 people, they could just ask them whether vaping encouraged them to smoke, how much vaping and how much smoking they did. That might prove whether those 16 had a gateway effect, but sadly implication for the wider community is nill.
