"The rationale behind bicycle helmets, marijuana laws, film classifications and possibly even pool fences will be examined by the Senate starting today, as part of an inquiry into the Australian "nanny state"."

The degree of State interference in people's lives should be scaled against the wider social impact. I worry about poker machines, scams and investment frauds which rip off particularly old people, because when their retirement funds are all dried up, it's public taxes that get diverted to paying for it.

The frustrating thing about vaping prohibitions and restrictions is that people who vape cost the public nothing. If anything we're benefitting the health system by living healthier lives.

Too right. The tax on pokie machines should be %90. It's a criminal industry, so the proceeds may as well benefit the greater good.

I know I sound like a far leftie but I believe all drugs should be decriinaized and the money spent on enforcing these archaic laws should be spent on giving users/ubusers a better chance to integrate into society and feel worthwhile, rather than labelling them with records and tainting all their future prospects. Portugal is proof that it works. As a prospective employer the govt. will subsidise %50 of your pay if you higher a junkie rather than a commoner. High financial incentive to get these people back on track, rather than pointless discrimination and isolation from the rest of us. Even in US states where MJ has be decriminilized in the states overall crime rates have dropped 15-20%. But these scientists, you now..; probably have their own agendas. lol.

People who feel valuable don't feel the need to escape in drugs. Fact.

Scientists aren't running this agenda. Politicians, pharma corporations, public health bodies and big tobacco all feed off smokers and are running the anti vaping agenda. Nothing to do with scientists

Am all for reviewing and killing off some of the laws which make no sense . like the drug laws, vaping, snus, bike helmet etc.. although I still think we need over 18 barriers to some vices..for example people who are under 18 dont belong in a porn shop (and it could be misused by some nasty types if they were flat out allowed)

Would love for some laws to become reasonable like the pool ones where retirees are forced to pay stupid amounts for pool fences to keep kids out.. and some other wacky building laws

but some laws I am weary about repealing... Like allowing too many people with guns for example .. esp when you factor in domestic and family violence

Where as regulating things can be a slippery slope - deregulating can have the same effect .. caution is still needed

Very few people ride bikes in Australia, compared to other Western countries, because of the stupid law that says we must wear a huge egg carton if we ride.
This has the dubious effect of making riding a bike "safer", while having the greater effect of impacting obesity levels, because fewer people ride.
Public health is more greatly impacted by this nanny state law, than it would be without it.

Vaping is, as Pleski rightly pointed out, costing public health more due to the nanny state laws imposed on it.

Hopefully this enquiry, sees us climbing back into the realm of logic & out of the clutches of do-gooders.

The crux of the Nanny State is the relegating of adult citizens to the status of children, and denying personal control and autonomy. The mantra is "this is for your own good".

To me gun control is not a Nanny State issue. Dangerous weapons affect everyone.

Restricting smoking in public places to force smokers into quitting is a gold star Nanny State tactic.

There is a flaw however I think in all of this debate when it comes to vaping tho isnt there?

Like the issue of Dylactle and other things that the vaping community has been arguing about for ages .. hell some people and vendors have even been pushed off various forum for their thoughts... things have been so heated.. things like how high a level of nic should newbies be allowed to have, clone vs non clone debate and more

So on one hand you have people screaming for freedom bc of 'choice' on the other those same people scream for regulation that could end in over regulation ..

If nothing else DL even tho I consider him a nutter - has posed some interesting questions for Aussie society
