    Thats awesome,

Just looking at it from a mispent youth, there is about 4 uses that immediately come to mind.

    Battery for my tatt gun.
    Use to light cones/ tobacco
    Soldering iron

Prisoners have disassembled kettles, bypassed safeties and turned them into lighters when normal lighters where removed recently. All are engraved and sealed with non-removavable tamper evident seals.

    But wait theres more

Prisons are a complex environment, I would love to see PV's introduced successfully.

But good luck for them with that one

I think one of the most successful ecig applications in prisons was one in the states. They were disposables, made of soft plastic that was impossible to weaponise. The nic and flavour was on a piece of blotting paper - difficult to extract and doing so would not make it any better. The battery was non-rechargeable and not li-Ion tech. Of very little use and power, and traceable. Inmates could get another only by returning the old one. It was probably woeful, but at least it was nic in a useable form. None of them were ever allowed to complain (lol).

All the wheels fell off it when ANTZ made a big deal about the supplier of the devices being the brother-in-law of the county sheriff. It was a couple of years ago so my memory is a little bit hazy. Yes it was stupid that the Sheriffe was putting himself in that obvious C-o-I position (giving a contract to a close family member), but it was just cruel to remove the e-cigs for that reason when smoking had been banned in the jails. Those were probably the jails that were later found to have inmates trying to extract nicotine from patches using battery acid, and smoking it. I always imagined that it was the same jails, but I suspect that was far more wide spread.

PV's in prison would be a great thing, since they banned smoking in prisons, now prisoners are using tea leaves, soaking all the flavour out, drying the tea leaves, wrapping them with a nicotine patch (yes glue and all), inserting these into the finger of a glove, placing this into hot water to activate the nicotine patch letting the tea leaves absorb the nicotine, then rolling this up and smoking it.
Some people have had bleeding from the ears etc from this practice.

Now we know ciggies are terrible for our health but this has to be worse.

I would like to ad I have not been to prison, I have had friends somewhat recently inside and this is what they have told me.

    Combustible tobacco trends in Japan

JT's (Japanese Tobacco inc) figures for October 2017 have been published on their website (PDF), and the trend is rather interesting. Gotta love govt owned tobacco publishing actual sales data barely two weeks after the end of each month.

If you're following the Japanese situation you'll know that their situation is kind of similar to Australia in that nicotine and vaping is not technically allowed, but it's not actively enforced for the most part either. Culturally vaping is not accepted though - Probably about where Australia was 2012 or even earlier as far as knowledge and prevalence, despite the fact that the technology availabe now is far superior.

What IS accepted is HnB (heat-not-burn), seems like Japan did not even bat an eyelid when that came along and culturally it seems to be an acceptable substitute for smoking in as much as it's being left up to personal choice with no restrictions. The interesting figures in that report is that the sale of cigarettes for October 2017 is down 12.5% from the same time last year, and is down 11.9% in total for the entire year from January. Significantly, the market share of JT is is 61.1% for Jan-Oct in both 2016 and 2017 - JT market share in cigarettes has not changed, only the totals have changed.

The main disruptive technology is HnB, and it seems to hitting cigarette sales hard. The only thing unknown in these figures is black market, but I don't think there's much incentive for black market tobacco and there's no trend towards it as far as I know.

The JT HnB product Ploom was late to market compared to AQOS, and technically inferior, so it seems that JT will be losing total market share for tobacco products if you count both combustible and HnB. https://www.jt.com/media/news/2017/pdf/20171117_02.pdf

HnB is a controversial topic in Australia, but it's being allowed to compete directly in the market place in Japan. The switch to what is perceived to be a safer product there seems to be significant, despite the fact that it's not as safe as vaping, and it doesn't appear to be cheaper than combustible cigarettes (it could actually be more expensive since the cost is a kit plus the ongoing cost of the sticks, which are comparable to cigarettes.

This is what can happen if you let safer products compete directly with combustibles. Imagine if they allowed vaping in the same way... complex issue but I think it's fair to say the result would have been at least this good despite the fact that none of the tobacco companies have a decent vape.

Quit methods used by American Smokers 2013-2014

    Full Text

    Notable Quote:

    5. Conclusions
E-cigarettes were used by American adult smokers as quit-smoking aids in 2013–2014 more frequently than NRT products or prescription drugs. In addition, they were the only single quit method with a significantly higher proportion of former smokers than unaided quitting.
Also note that this data is from three to four years ago. Claims that there is no evidence for the effectiveness of vaping as cessation tool is not true - it's just that some researchers don't want to go looking for proof.

I also note that more recent figures from the US show the decline in smoking rates has slowed as the propaganda and legal attacks against vaping (vape bans, flavour bans, deeming regs, smear campaigns etc) start to take effect. Given that it's all as plain as the nose on their collective ANTZ faces, their ideology would appear to be the thing that is killing people.

    This needs a decent write-up.
