NZ: Should cigarette sales go back to pharmacies?

A New Zealand study suggests that only tobacconists—and pharmacies—should sell cigarettes

    https://ajp.com.au/news/cigarette-sa...ck-pharmacies/

Apologies to RATM if she, or anyone, has already posted this, I haven't been in this thread in a while

In any event I'm just gonna throw this in the water and stand back while the piranhas strip it clean....

Bottled alcohol is only able to be sold in licensed bottle shops and not supermarkets/corner shops(including ones owned by say woolies or Coles like bws and liquorland)
And tabacoo should be the same only sold from licensed tabbacconists and removed from everywhere else.
    Just my opinion

I think for me its more that a lot of people worry about ecigs ending up as a pharmacy only product, chucked in with fricking patches and chewing gum...alongside shit that doesnt work for the bulk of smokers, thereby giving the appearance that theyre all equal....and under the control of thinkwanks like the TGA here

My gut feeling we should leave it alone and thank our tiny blessings,
Given the slightest encouragement the bean counters will legislate vaping to death.
We'll will end up with 2mg nic plus have to pay for a licence to buy it,plus line up up at a pharmacy and probably registered as nic addicts.

Nope because they are a consumer product not a medical product, or even a specialist product.

This really wouldn't surprise me at all. A lot of dairy's (corner stores) are refusing to sell tobacco products as well as independent supermarkets and servo's. Not because they don't want to sell them but for the risk factors.
I've read a few article's recently on Z(shell petroleum) have to spend $1.2 m on cigarette dispenser's for just there Auckland servo's.
Tobacco products have become the most stolen article in NZ.

Exactly it will make "Stinkies" appear to be a medical product.

I have had this discussion with tobacconists, quite a few told me they would love to sell e-gigs/ vapes at their B&M stores, but they have been told by their tobacco wholesalers that if they did they would not receive any tobacco products. Their accounts would be cancelled. Tobacconists at present regardless if they own their B&M store or its owned by the tobacco companies are hamstrung not to sell vape products.

As to cigarettes and tobacco products being withdrawn from sale from servo's and corner stores this is due to the humongous increase in their price and people are now breaking in and stealing cigarettes etc.

One corner store proprietor told me if he was to continue to sell tobacco products his insurance would nearly double. His is a simple corner store., IGA and he is not about to spend a fortune on sophisticated alarm systems as found in Liquor stores. His solution was simple. Scrap cigarette sales and put up a sign no cigarettes sold here. He does not sell alcohol either, and has not had a break in problem since he implemented this policy.

In a way the Feds are doing us a favor less and less outlets are now selling cigarettes a blessing I would say.

I would quietly and unnofficially be looking to the Pharmacy guild on this idea -

Megan Haggan the Author seems to write alot that is in line with them - like expanding on vaccinations through pharmacy rather than through doctors, codine register, expanding drugs and services through chemists and other things - the AJP also is well known to have big pharma ties and funding

She writes alot about the positives of chemists- but not so much about the negatives like how they pushed to cut penalty rates, the strict rules that they have in place and the fight against deregulating thier industry so they dont have to face competition and more

If tobacco is allowed to be only sold in chemists- then no doubt vaping products will follow at a monopoly and at a higher cost than there is now

What will come next? Sugar? Salt? chocolate and soft drink or other things deemed 'bad' for you?

It seems to me that caution is perhaps advised when looking at some of these articles and that chemists would have alot to gain with its push back to the fully govt protected american style corner 'drugstore' type model while the rest of us really have alot to lose esp in the long run

I am sick and tired of the prohibitionist anti nic zealots.
They have gone too far and have crossed too many lines. So far as I'm concerned adults have the right to personal freedom to eat drink and smoke what they choose.
And yes the fatties are the next on the list. Activists are like sharks, they have to keep moving on or they die. Demolish one target and move on to the next.
