    Formaldehyde studies (Dr F)

Dr F's formaldehyde replication studies are being published.

Aldehyde levels in e-cigarette aerosol: Findings from a replication study and
from use of a new-generation device

Ever since it was published Dr F has had his sights set on the Sleiman study and its ridiculous findings for huge amounts of aldehyde produced by burning a CE4 at double digit power settings. This is the study to quote when ANTS trot out that tired old hack.

The most telling result was for aldehyde on the the high power test of course:

Sleiman results - CE4 at 4.7V, flavoured, 3422.2 ug (same as ppm)
Dr F results - Nautilus mini at 13.5 watts, flavoured, 2.7 ug

That's more than a difference of 10^3, three orders of magnitude difference. Of course Dr F explained the differences between more modern devices, and why the Sleiman studies were fundementally flawed (basically, Sleiman et al don't understand the technology or how is used. Either that or they knew and went ahead anyway which would be the more damning conclusion).

As an aside, Dr F also compared unflavoured liquids in his study. The results are very interesting, and while there was nothing terribly concerning about the tests with flavoured liquid, the only conclusion I can come to is that unflavoured liquid, carefully controlled, is going to be marginally safer than flavoured (also vaping MTL instead of DL, (but that's whole 'nuther horse Dr F did not deal with here, but he's certainly put that idea forward a few times over the years). Basically, Dr F has demonstrated things to the scientific community that we all have known for years. It would be a foolhardy researcher indeed that ignored this research from here on.

Thanks for finding this fab. It's great to see common sense and logic start to rear it's head.

I don't think being a scientist and being logical are mutually inclusive these days.
Just as long as you get the research $$$'s
"Go away and come back when you understand better." he said. He would not let me pass.

The more he learns (ie can prove), the better his authority gets.

Letter to the Editor: The effects of electronic cigarette aerosol exposure on inflammation and lung function in mice | Lung Cellular and Molecular Physiology

As far as my limited understanding of how these journals work, for Dr F's (and et al) letter to the editor to get published in the same journal as the report he takes issue with is tantamount to tearing them to shreds. The fact that he calls into questions the peer review process of the (American) journal and still gets published is breathtaking.

That didn't happen in the case of NEJM article, because they shut him out.

These things might seem uninteresting in themselves, but it represents a huge shift in the scientific landscape.
