Most recent Australian tobacco excise figures 2010 - 2011

For the 2010 - 2011 financial year, excise from tobacco products was $6.4 billion, an 11.8% increase from 2009 - 2010.

Anyone have any health care costs attributed to tobacco smoking for the same financial year as of yet?

The only thing I can find are "social" costs, which are about as much of a guesstimate as they are an accurate estimate.

I dont understand the whole smokers cost the medical system more. Everyone dies at some point and most people these days dont die from natural causes.

The cost of smokers to the medical system is roughly $300 million per annum (as opposed to alcohol which is almost a billion dollars per annum). I'm sorry I don't have the source, but will try to find it and post it.

The other thing is because elderly smokers tend to die several years earlier, and mostly do so after retirement, so it's an ironic boon to the welfare system.

That is just perfect. $147M invested in tobacco companies around the world to offset government employees & pollies super. Seems they (the G'ment) have a lot of faith in the money being spent on killing off the tobacco industry in Oz. It does my head in trying to understand any logic in this.

Agreed Avguy, it's annoying when a government try's to tell you what's best for you, when what there actually doing isn't best for you.
