European Commission wants to ban e-cigarettes and Smokeless Tobacco

A draft of the EU's Tobacco Product Directive was leaked to the German press this week. You may recall the EU-wide public consultation on this directive, the results of which were published last year and showed majority opposition to extreme tobacco control measures and a "vast majority" in favour of repealing the scientifically baseless ban on snus.

"A significant majority of (citizen) respondents were against extending the scope of the Directive (ie further regulations).

A vast majority of (citizen) respondents ... were in favour of lifting the ban on snus.

A significant majority of (citizen) respondents disagreed with the regulation of ingredients at the EU level.

A significant majority of (citizen) respondents opposed limiting access to tobacco products."

The 125 page draft document strongly suggests that the European Commission has decided not to listen to the citizens and has instead decided to heed their sock-puppet pressure groups and the gentlemen of the pharmaceutical industry. This may not surprise you. According to European news sources, the directive could be much worse than anybody feared. Lowlights include: -

Total ban on all forms of smokeless tobacco across the EU (except Sweden)
    Total ban on e-cigarettes
Ban on menthol and other flavourings (previously rumoured, as I reported in April)
Standardised cigarette width, length and colour
Ban on shopkeepers displaying more than one variety of each brand
Graphic warnings on packs covering 75 per cent of the surface

    heh, mostly.

But I'm also really good at organising my 'inputs' as I call them. Bookmarks and Live feed checking is part of my daily work flow.

You should see the browser I use for work research stuff. A 4 letter gene on Chromosome 4 doesn't get published on the net without me knowing about it.

My porn browser.... similar story... ;-)

This worries me about what will happen to Australia.

Thinking positively, in 10 years i can see eCigs growing so fast they'll convert 80%+ of current smokers here in OZ. This is if the following happen:
1- eCigs are declared safe by the government
2- eCigs become an approved NRT
3- They dont become heavily taxed
4- sale of nicotine becomes legal

Thinking negatively, i can see big tobacco and Big Pharma getting their way and ecigs will be banned and never become a NRT. Its a scary thought really but i have very little faith in the political system.

I think i'm just gonna stock up on some bulk nic to last me a lifetime, just to be safe.

i think all 4 of those will happen, you can bet the pharma is wanting to get the control, so only 'approved' devices will be allowed, will be classified as NRT and worst case .. prescribed only ..

    ie, banned for 'recreational' use.

unless, one day logic prevails .. but since when did logic prevail where big companys with lawyers, money and greed get involved, add government and throw in the word 'drug' for good measure .. scenario not good.
