Do no harm, says former ASH director to WHO in newly released open letter

The Former Executive Director of Action on Smoking Health (UK), Clive Bates, has released an open letter urging the World Health Organization not to deny smokers access to ways of taking nicotine with greatly reduced risk. The WHO gathers this 12-17 November 2012 for the fifth Conference of the Parties of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC).

Recently, WHO has been criticized for their unreasonable stance against electronic cigarettes. Professor Micheal Siegel wrote about the four absurd reasons that WHO is using to justify a world wide ban, which include; because electronic cigarettes look like real cigarettes, because analogue smokers might use them, Because electronic cigarettes give off toxic smoke (a claim that has proven to be false by a number of independent peer reviewed scientific articles), and because they believe that the use of electronic cigarettes are a form of tobacco cigarette advertising.

A cynic may suggest that the WHO have already made their decisions.
At least after their announcements, we will have a better idea of what we're up against.
