Cool 2018 Mod Comp- Brainstorming + Entries + Chat Thread - Closes 20th March

2017 AVF "Build a Mod" Comp

I think what the time frame has trouble allowing for is people like me, who are going to have to buy parts and wait for them to arrive. Some of the enthusiasm can damp down during the wait, or life priorities shift around a bit.

Maybe, if we run a workshop for sourcing parts and bouncing ideas around first it will help some of us lame ducks out. Even if the build doesn't get done, we then have parts knocking around "the shed" which might get used next time. I don't see lack of participation or failure to complete as failure for the idea - nothing is wasted. I have pipe fittings and at least one 510 connector laying around which I was inspired to purchase after seeing the last comps. (I just don't know where they are yet, because they were low on the priority list when I was packing up).

If us lame ducks don't have a plan and a box parts at the end of the "workshop", then we are probably not in the running. Still not a waste. There's also a chance that the "workshop discussion" will inspire more participation, either straight up or in the future.

This gives you two deadlines to work towards - maybe three or four weeks for parts acquisition and planing, then maybe four or five weeks for the build. Breaking it into two smaller parts may actually encourage participation, and no matter what happens there are no losers.

P.S. They have everything else you could possible need there too......

As title says, soft deadline is 9 weeks. Hopefully we can get active discussion in that time, maybe a co-op type deal to split postage.

Prizes aren't set in stone yet, I'm torn between keeping to same format of paypal, or maybe giving tangible things this year? Open to feedback. I guess paypal credit doesn't tie anyone to a device they aren't keen on. But I did consider modding supplies, which would need to be suitable for all workshops/sheds that may lack specialty tools. So probably not nice burls etc that not everyone could use.

    Dunno.

Open to all modders of all experience levels. Won't set a theme like the first year had, just creation of a mod. Last year opened up the possibility of entering projects which had been started previously, but revisited for purpose of comp. Open to feedback on that.

3D printers have taken off in recent times. 3D printed mods are eligible provided you have designed them. Designs by third parties downloaded off the net and printed at home do not qualify.

Hammond box type enclosures are OK.

Will come back and edit in any new info, but will always post a fresh reply about it, so no need to continually check OP.

Judging is by way of public vote. After entries close, a new thread goes up with entries to vote on. Last year was a draw between rotten and laurie. The lead changed several times, and it was quite something.

    Does that cover everything?

Feel free to ask advice on builds, component sources etc. These discussions fuel the enthusiasm of others.

    OK,

One prize will be a $50 Victory Vape gift card. Just sorted that now. As some will remember, I prefer not to need to hold funds in paypal or bank lol. So this works better.

If anyone wants a bit of wood cut to a specific size let me know. Blackwood, macrocarpa, pine and black wattle available.
I plan to use stabilised blackwood and brass for my disaster.

Thinking we can copy xx, and let people choose their prize

Difficult if we get another draw like last year lol

And hopefully we can get some discussion started
