    What is an Electronic Cigarette?

An electronic cigarette can come in many different shapes and sizes. The two main types are disposable (non rechargeable) and rechargeable. They can be realistic cigarette styles (as above), cigar styles or even in the shape of pens and other items. For this guide we will talk about the realistic style rechargeable electronic cigarettes.
An electronic cigarette is made up of two parts. The body or white part is the rechargeable battery (fig 1) and the filter part (fig 2) is the bit that holds the nicotine and vapour solution. These two parts screw together to make up the electronic cigarette.
The easiest way to recharge the battery is with a USB charger (fig 3). The electronic cigarette battery simply screws in to the USB charger (fig 4) and the USB charger can then be plugged in to any computer/laptop or USB enabled device. You can also purchase electronic cigarettes with wall chargers and car chargers which plug in to the cigarette lighter in your car.

What is an Electronic Cigarette made from?

The batteries are madeof metal, normally alloy tube. The alloy tube is wrapped in vinyl to make it look like a cigarette. The most common batteries are wrapped in white vinyl, but many other colours and designs are available. Sealed inside the tube are the rechargeable lithium ion battery and a chipset to control the charging rate. This chipset will also cut the battery out if it is puffed for over six seconds to stop the battery overheating.

At one end of the battery is an LED light that glows when the electronic cigarette is puffed. This feature is to make the electronic cigarette more realistic looking, but will also flash when the electronic cigarette needs recharging. The LED lights are available in different colours, the most popular being orange, blue and green.

The filter or cartridge part can either be made from alloy tube or plastic which has a thread at one end to screw into the battery and a small hole at the other end for the vapour to be released. Inside the filter is a part called the atomizer, this is a small device that when the electronic cigarette is puffed switches on and heats up the liquid in the filter.

What’s the stuff inside an electronic cigarette?

For this section we can only tell you what is in our own brand Pulse Electronic Cigarettes as we do not know what other manufacturers use in their own models.
Pulse Electronic Cigarettes refill cartridges contain flavour and nicotine that is dissolved in hygroscopic components by the atomizer, which turns the water in the propylene glycol solution into a smoke-like vapour when heated. We only use propylene glycol to produce the vapour in our products! Our Electronic Cigarettes meet the following safety standards, CE, SGS, and RoHS.
Propylene glycol has been utilized in asthma inhalers and nebulizers since the 1950s, and because of its water-retaining properties, is the compound of choice for delivering atomized medication. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) includes propylene glycol on its list of substances Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS), and it meets the requirements of acceptable compounds within Title 21 of the Code of Federal Regulations. In comparison, traditional tobacco cigarettes contain at least 80 known cancer causing chemicals, including tar.
You are in essence inhaling a water based solution that holds the chosen flavour and nicotine level. This is heated in to a fine vapour when the electronic cigarette is inhaled by the atomizer in the filter. The vapour you exhale is water vapour and has no odour and contains none of the nasties in normal cigarettes.

How do I smoke an electronic cigarette?

This is the easiest bit to answer… as electronic cigarettes are very simple to use. When you receive your electronic cigarette, the battery will have a small amount of charge in it. But we suggest you charge it fully for its first use. You will know when it is fully charged as the small Led on the USB charger will change from red to green.
Once you have your charged battery, simply screw your filter in to the battery. The electronic cigarette is now ready to use.
The electronic cigarette will feel heavier and slightly larger than a normal cigarette and this does take a few days to get used to. You may also find the way you smoke changes. Often you will find two or three puffs sufficient whereas in the past you would have smoked a whole normal cigarette.
Just inhale like you would a normal cigarette. From a personal point of view I was smoking 20 a day of a well-known brand of cigarettes and getting a nasty brown flem when coughing. Since changing to electronic cigarettes within two days this disappeared.

What are the benefits in smoking an electronic cigarette?

There are three main benefits in switching to an electronic cigarette. Health, cost and considering others.
Although nothing has been proved by any accredited health organization, many electronic cigarette users have expressed health benefits such as reduction in coughing, easier breathing and general better wellbeing.
The cost implications are also very favourable. One of our starter packs cost £9.99 and is equivalent to 40 normal cigarettes. If you compare this to normal cigarettes at £6.00 per pack average, straight away you’re saving £2.00. But it is the refills where you really save. A pack of five Pulse Cigarettes refills costs £7.99. Each refill is equivalent to 20 cigarettes, which works out at £1.60 per 20 normal cigarettes! A 20 a day smoker would save £1606.00 per year!
As electronic cigarettes don’t produce any cancer causing chemicals, they are safer for your family and friends. Smoking in confined spaces like the car is possible without having to feel guilty.
Oh and your clothes and hair wont smell of smoke. Actually within a week or so, you will really begin to notice the smell of smoke;whether from cigarettes or bonfires etc. you’ll be surprised at how you didn’t notice it before.

How long will my electronic cigarette last?

The battery should last a 20 a day smoker most of the day, but this will differ from person to person. Some people take longer puffs and may smoke it like a normal cigarette while others may only take 3-4 puffs at a time. But as a rule the battery should last most of the day.

The cartridges/filters last for 20 cigarettes or around 200-250 puffs. As an ex 20 a day smoker I find my battery lasts a day and a filter about a day and a half. But as said before everyone is different.

    What flavours are available?

Each electronic cigarette manufacturer produces their own range of flavours. You’ll be surprised how many flavours there are!
At Electronic Cigarettes, E Cigarettes, E Cigs, from Pulse Electronic Cigarettes UK we produce a range of flavours from the normal tobacco flavour to Red Bull flavour.
Flavour List: Tobacco, menthol, vanilla, strawberry, no nicotine tobacco, caramel, red bull

Will electronic cigarettes help me give up smoking?

Only you will be able to answer this one! Electronic Cigarettes are not intended as nicotine replacement therapy and no government or health organization has carried out any research to suggest that electronic cigarettes will stop you from smoking.
From personal experience electronic cigarettes have helped me to stop smoking. But I have friends who smoke normal and electronic cigarettes and some that have tried electronic cigarettes and gone back to smoking. If you really want to give up cigarettes and/or you have tried other ways to no avail I would suggest you try an electronic cigarette. For £9.99 you haven’t got that much to lose.
